10 alternatve 10k races for 2022

Now we've finally figured out what day it is, and the Christmas & New Year fog starts to clear, we thought we'd bring you some of the more interesting 10k + events taking place throughout 2022.

Having a target date or event in mind always helps focus your training efforts and planning. So whether its a marathon along the shores of Loch Ness, chasing the tide in Devon or having your own battle in Hastings, there's sure to be an event you've never thought of in this list....

Loch ness marathon

With spectacular scenery, a fantastic atmosphere and a truly memorable experience, the Loch Ness Marathon & Festival of Running has become a global attraction.

The last event attracted 9,500 runners from around the world, the highest in it's 18 year history. 

The Festival of Running has plenty to entertain runners and spectators over the race weekend with a Sports Expo, Runners Cafe, guest speakers, street food, live music, kids’ activities and a Wee Nessie kids’ race.

Starting and finishing from the fisherman's pub on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal this race ventures out towards Skipton.

The route is by and large flat and good underfoot giving you a great opportunity for a PB.

There is also a couple of 3 or 5 lock rises aimed to kill any tied legs, so be warned!

race the tide

This event includes a run out over a causeway only accessible at low tide so you'll need to be quick.

There are 3 distances you can take part in that all take in the beautiful South West Coast Path as well as bridleways, footpaths and woodland sections.

This 5.3k route is set through the breathtaking forest of Brandon Country Park and you have 6 hours to run as far as you can!

You will have the choice to run the entire 6 hours, rest between laps at the aid station, or to finish their race before the 3pm end.

With small inclines rather than hills, this course is primarily flat and mainly follows an undulating pathway consisting of gravel pathways and some grass areas

Cybi Coastal Marathon

The Cybi Coastal is a not for profit event supporting the RNLI Holyhead and Trearddur Bay lifeboat stations.

Starting in the port town of Holyhead this race takes you all the way around the island of Anglesey.

There route is over a variety of surfaces. Easy going paved paths, a small amount of road sections, sandy beaches, fields and single tracks. Tricky cliff tops and with a few good hill climbs and to top it all off a short sharp climb to the top of Holyhead Mountain and back down to sea level.

glen coe marathon

The Glencoe Marathon links Glen Nevis with the great Glencoe.

Taking in two gruelling climbs, with a total ascent of 1369m as well as the Devil’s Staircase, a gruelling 240 metre descent over the eastern edge of the truly fearsome Aonach Eagach Ridge, runners will be rewarded at every turn with views of some of the most stunning and dramatic mountains in the Scottish Highlands.

beyond jurassic

Starting in West Bay this event follows the costal paths  that follow the Jurassic Coastline.

This is a two-day event with distances to suit every runner. It's a multi-surface run that includes tarmac, gravel paths and the coastal footpaths.

Much of the run will have sea views either out towards Weymouth Bay or on the return out towards Lyme Regis.

the longhorn

Set in the grounds of Sherwood Forest & the beautiful Thoresby Park this run takes you over old military roads, cleared tracks through ancient woodland and grassed paths around the country estate.

The route has a number of hills throughout the course to offering a challenge all the way round but its more than worth the pain as you get to run through some of the oldest woodland in Europe that's home to 'Major Oak' the oldest tree of its kind and home to Robin Hood.

the bbb 10k

Enjoy running in the last of the Summer sun in this fantastic 10k that takes you through the historic streets of Battle, finishing at the ancient Battle Abbey.

Kicking off on Battle High Street, this 10k begins with a short out and back on the high street before meandering through the old streets to finish off on the Abbey Green of Battle Abbey - the site of the Battle of Hastings.

This is a fast course with a fantastic atmosphere so a great chance to get out and set a PB before heading into the Winter months.

bridlington new year bonanza

Finish the year and the festive season with this fabulous two day event along the coastal path from Sewerby to Bridlington.

With a choice of three distances and two days, all that's left for you to do is pick your pain (or pleasure) and join hundreds of others in sending off 2022 in the best possible way.

And the best bit....all participants are provided with a post race pie and hot drink!
